Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring my dog (cat)?

Unfortunately no. We are a ‘pet free’ property. No exceptions.

Do you have occupancy limits?

Yes we do have occupancy limits. This is to prevent overload of the septic system (Cozy Cottages) and holding tank (Avoca Ridge).

Cozy Cottages: Limit of 4 adults per cottage. 6 people are allowed as long as at least two of them are under 13 years of age.

Avoca North: Limit of 4 people.

Avoca South: Limit of 6 adults. 8 people are permitted with prior consent if the additional people are children under 13.

How do I access the river?

River access is available to guests in Avoca North and South via a shared staircase behind Avoca South.

Are there any rules we need to be aware of?

Yes – we do have some rules. Port Albert is a quiet village and in order to keep our neighbours happy, we ask that guests maintain the peaceful atmosphere and to comply with the rules. Here is the short list but please read this detailed list before arrival.

  • All renters are required to act in a quiet, respectful manner.
  • Loud music is not permitted. Music is not permitted outside and music indoors must not be audible to neighbours.
  • No parties are allowed to avoid noise complaints and overloading the septic systems.
  • Day guests are welcome; however, note that the primary renter must be present when guests are on the property (no co-renting or sub-letting without prior consent)
  • Maximum of 2 vehicles for each 2 bedroom cottage.
  • All cabins are NON-SMOKING.
  • Pets are not allowed.
  • Garbage and recycling is to be properly sorted, flattened and deposited in the appropriate bin.
  • You may not discard garbage or cigarette butts on the ground.
  • Take any broken beach chairs or toys home with you.
  • Fires are to be attended to.
  • Respect and protect the river bank. Please do not tread on flowers or break saplings.
  • Respect and protect the trees on the property. Please do not embed knives or hatchets in tree trunks or carve names. You may not harvest firewood for your vacation from our lot.
  • Towels or blankets that belong to the cottage may not be used outside at the beach or by the fire.
  • Cottage and grounds are to be left as they were upon arrival with dishes dried and put away, sinks washed and floors swept.
Can we have fires? What about firewood?

Yes. All cottages have their own fire pit with chairs.

You will need to supply your own firewood. You can purchase it from Dan directly across the road from Avoca North or at the Port Albert General Store when you get here.

Is there WiFi and cable?

Yes, WiFi is available in all cottages. We have digital cable package in all cottages except Avoca North.

How much privacy can we expect at your cottages?

Our cottages are in close proximity to one-another and also close to the beach. That means if you’re a people-watcher, you’ll enjoy watching other cottagers make their way to the beach in the morning, and watching them return with sunburns. Explore our property on Google Maps’ street view to get an idea.

We don’t allow parties or loud music and rent exclusively to quiet couples and families. Guests that intrude on the privacy or the ability of others to enjoy a quiet holiday, will be asked to quiet down or leave.

How do you manage garbage and recycling?

Unfortunately we do not compost for our cottages as it can attract racoons.

Our township only does basic recycling. That means we DO recycle:

  • metals such as pop cans, soup or tomato tins
  • glass bottles and jars
  • plastic trays, bottles and yogurt/sour cream type containers
  • CLEAN aluminum foil
  • bond paper and newsprint
  • boxboard and card board
  • milk, juice and egg cartons

We DO NOT recycle:

  • paper towels or kleenex
  • dirty paper plates or foil
  • dirty take out boxes
  • grocery bags, paper towel/toilet paper bags, or the plastic top from cases of pop

Please deposit recycling into the cans with the clear plastic bags, and garbage into a can with a green garbage bag.

For Cozy Cottages, they cans are in front the shed beside Cozy West.

For Avoca North there is a bin with cans in front of the cottage and for Avoca South it is in front of the pump house beside the firepit.

Is the water safe to drink?

Yes! We have our well water tested regularly with the Huron County Health Unit and it is always deemed safe to drink. We have also have had full-spectrum testing for heavy metals, petro-chemicals, toxins and bacteria and have received a clean bill of health.

If you are unaccustomed to well-water, you may find it  has an unusual flavour due to the absence of chlorine and the high mineral content.

Avoca Ridge South and both Cozy Cottages cottages have an iron filter on the water supply to improve the flavour and smell of the water.

Avoca North, without the filter, has a slight iron/sulphur smell and does leave rust stains on the toilet, sink and shower.

What are the cottages equipped with? What do we need to bring?

All of the cottages have their own BBQ, pots and pans, dishes, cutlery, utensils, toaster, coffee maker, and pillows.
You will need to bring your own bed sheets, pillow cases, towels, beach toys and chairs and firewood.
Check our What’s included/What to bring checklist for details.

What time is check-in/check-out?

Check-in is Saturday after 4:30 pm and check-out is Saturday before 10:30 am. These times are flexible in low and mid season if prearranged.

What if we need to cancel?

Most bookings are made a few months in advance and a week’s booking cancelled at the last minute is unlikely to be filled as peak season only lasts 8 weeks. We therefore have the following cancellation policy:

  • More than 6 weeks notice –  deposit is refunded less a $100.00 administration/cancellation fee.
  • Less than 6 weeks – no deposit refund
  • Leaving early – no refunds
Are there canoes or kayaks we can use?

Unfortunately we do not have boats for guests to use. However, you can bring your own and launch in the river or down at the beach.

What if we run out of ice, SMORE supplies or forgot a toothbrush?

If you’ve forgotten something at home or need to resupply, don’t worry. The Port Albert General Store is stocked with marshmallows, toiletries, sunscreen and more. They also have a licensed pub, a take out menu and an ice cream bar. You can see their menu online or visit them on Facebook.
